The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and the Division of Research (DOR) at Kaiser Permanente Northern California have joined to offer a Building Interdisciplinary Research careers in Women's Health (BIRCWH), an NIH supported program to train junior faculty to be successful, independent clinical and translational investigators in women's health.

This new program builds on the research successes of both UCSF and Kaiser, the institutions' commitment to women's health, and the availability of extensive supporting resources to develop a training environment for scholars who will have sustained contribution to the field of women's health. This partnership affords a unique opportunity to offer a training program that can meet the long-term goal of increasing both the amount and quality of multidisciplinary translational research conducted on women's health and the number of individuals with successful research careers in women's health.

UCSF and Kaiser have a rich research environment with an extensive array of ongoing research projects in women's health. Nationally and internationally renowned women's health scholars can be identified in almost every school, department, and research unit. This breadth of expertise is supported by a nationally recognized clinical program in women's health, The UCSF Women's Health, a commitment to the promotion of women as leaders, and strong long-term relationships with communities caring for and about women. Because of this broad-based campus agenda for women's health, UCSF was designated one of the original six National Centers of Excellence in Women's Health by the Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Service Office on Women's Health.

Kaiser DOR-based researchers will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Region Women's Health Program and with key clinical leaders in appropriate specialites to ensure that research findings are incorporated into practice.

Women's Health Research Areas

We have organized our strengths in women’s health into 10 Multidisciplinary Research Teams (breast cancer; cardiovascular disease; complementary and alternative medicine; dementia and cognitive dysfunction; HIV in women; menopause and hormone therapy; obesity; osteoporosis and osteoarthritis; screening for disease and urinary incontinence). Each team is led by Senior Mentors (an experienced translational and clinical researcher) and includes Resource Faculty from multiple disciplines, extensive Research Resources and multiple Repositories of Biological Specimens or Images.

Scholars will complete individualized didactic training in basic science or clinical research and practical experience mentored by senior scientists. In consultation with mentors, Scholars will prepare and annually revise a training program including a research agenda similar to NIH K-series proposals. Each plan will be built around milestones toward independence: presentations, publications and independent funding. A bi-weekly Core Seminar in Women’s Health will cover a range of issues in women’s health and a bi-weekly Works-in-Progress session will allow Scholars ample time for expert feedback on research projects.

Please see our Program Description for a more detailed description of the Program and the Training Plan.

Who Should Apply

Applicants can be MDs or PhDs, but must have research experience and training, scholarship, expertise, or programmatic experience that can be translated into a clinical or translational research career. Applicants must be US citizens or Permanent Residents. Successful applicants will have training in clinical research methods, a clear research agenda, the potential to obtain independent research funding, and evidence of publication in peer-reviewed journals. The selection process will emphasize talent, commitment to women's health, potential fit with our strengths, and diversity. Candidates will affiliate with a clinical department at UCSF or with the Kaiser DOR. UCSF scholars will be appointed to Assistant Professor positions in the appropriate department depending upon their area of specialty (must have a UCSF faculty position, or the commitment of one to receive BIRCWH support). DOR scholars will be appointed to the equivalent position, Research Scientist I or Physician I. DOR Physicians are members of the Permanente Group.

We are seeking applicants who share a passion for research and have the potential to become leaders in their field. Individuals from underrepresented ethnic minority groups are encouraged to apply.
